This book was not the right fit for me . . . I simply could not connect to the characters nor to very much of this narrative.
There were brief moments in this novel that tugged at my heart, especially when it dealt with the plight of moms, injustice, or the love of community. Much of the story was a lesson in poor choices and the perpetual grief of economic and generational trauma. If you are okay with facing head-on the harsh realities of the lost demographics of the inner city, people weighed heavy by addiction, mired circumstance, or mental illness . . . you could give this one a chance. For me, it stirred up feelings of trepidation, deep dread, and hopelessness.
I’d like to thank NetGalley for an advanced copy of The Shape of Dreams for my unbiased evaluation. 2.5 stars
