Charming and chilling! This author has become an auto-click for me, and this new novel did not disappoint. At first glance, Elsie Mabel Fitzpatrick seems like your average elderly neighborhood grump. If you look a little closer, you might notice that she has a strange history of people in her life who have passed away under questionable circumstances. A boisterous little girl moves in next door with her distracted mother. Elsie sends everyone clear signals to leave her be. Despite Elsie’s prickly exterior, curious little Persephone chooses to latch onto this old crab. This unlikely pairing will make you question what you think you know about the inner worlds of little girls and old ladies….and what you believe they are capable of.
I highly recommend this book to fans of dark humor, mystery, and richly layered stories with well-developed, quirky characters.
I thank NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of Mad Mabel for my unbiased evaluation. 5 stars
